The House of Scandinavia was opened in 1952 by Harvey and Elaine Hultquist of Minneapolis, MN. Harvey was a wood carver and they sold both Scandinavian items and his beautiful carvings in their shop. When the Hultquists retired in 1984, Harold and Jean Watkins took over the business. Both Harold and Jean were born and raised in Minnesota and lived there until they moved their family to Rapid City in 1974. Before moving, Harold farmed in the Willmar/Kerkhoven area and Jean was the director of the Willmar School of Practical Nursing. Since buying the business in 1984, the Watkins have expanded the small seasonal shop into a Black Hills’ destination for everything Scandinavian. Over the years, their daughters JoAnn Strommen and Carmen Graves have joined them in the family business. Carmen currently runs the day to day business operations with assistance from her parents and sisters. Sharing and carrying on the Scandinavian traditions of our heritage is the heart of our business. We enjoy visiting with our customers and hearing about their interests, family stories and traditions so we can build relationships and better serve them.
